Recently,
there have been many environmentally friendly opportunities
like renewable clean energy and products created from
recycled goods.
Today I ran across an article
about how San Francisco wants to help residents recycle
their pet waste. The pilot program is led by Norcal Waste,
the company that handles the city's garbage.
Norcal will be collecting the
"goods" from a popular dog park via biodegradable
bags and dog-waste carts. The waste will then be put into
a "methane digester," transforming it into methane
gas, which can be used to power anything that uses natural
gas or can be converted into electricity.
This technology isn't new,
says the MSNBC article, but those interviewed said they
haven't heard of pet waste used in this fashion in the
United States, only Europe. There are a few farms in the
US that take advantage of methane digesters to create
energy from farm animal waste.
So just because we think of
poop as, well, waste, does that mean it has to go to waste?
Europe is ahead of the United
States in this game, so we'd be wise to keep an eye on
this San Francisco program. Should it prove to be popular,
it'll be a wide-open field for enterprising souls who
have dull senses of smell and strong environmental urges.
Hold on to that Poop!
It may drive your car or power your home one day.
Isn't it time to get another dog?
